Support Groups
Support groups can help with a variety of common conditions such as pain management, mental disorders, trauma, and/or major life changes.
Why should I attend a support group?
There are many benefits to attending a support group. Support groups are a space where individuals and family members can come together to share stories, experiences, and lives in a way that helps reduce loneliness. Often, we think we are alone in our struggles, but support groups help us see that there are other people like us dealing with similar circumstances. We can also find strength in helping other people.
In addition to hearing and being heard, you may get helpful information in a support group. Group members share their success stories and strategies that helped them move forward in their recovery.
By meeting and talking with other group members, you also have a chance to practice social skills and interact more effectively with others. Often stressful life situations can cause us to withdraw or even become isolated. Our support groups provide a space to become comfortable around others.
What support groups do you offer?
Free NAMI “Share and Care”
The Woodlands Psychiatry and Counseling is pleased to partner with NAMI Greater Houston (National Alliance of Mental Illness), in hosting a bi-monthly, peer-led support group for adults living with mental health issues, and/or family members. You will gain insight from hearing the challenges and successes of others, as the groups are led by NAMI-trained facilitators who've been there. These support groups are unique because they follow a structured model to ensure you and others in the group have an opportunity to be heard and to get what you need.
